Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will lives its whole life believing that it is stupid. - Albert Einstein

What are the people at Rhode Island Department of Education thinking? Can one test really tell us all we need to know about student competency?

Rhode Island young people are required, by law, to attend school until the age of 18. According to an article published Feb. 2012, by the Rhode Island affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, students who do not pass the RI Dept. of Education implementation in 2014 "high stakes testing" requirement will not receive a diploma. Based on this years recently released NECAP testing scores in math, 44% of all students currently enrolled may not graduate. 84% of special education students, 70% African American and Latino students, 79% of Central Falls students, 69% Providence Students, 13% of Barrington students and 14% of East Greenwich students will not qualify for a diploma. Legislation sponsored by Rep. Naughton and Senator Metts is pending to bar the Dept. of Education from implementing this failed attempt to improve the quality of education in Rhode Island, and to instead requires districts to provide the supports needed to boost student achievement.
